Guild Wars 2 vs. World of Warcraft

Guild Wars 2 vs. World of Warcraft

I play both World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2 and I love them both dearly. But there are some major differences between the games that make each game all the more interesting.

World of Warcraft

Pros: One of the things I love the most about this game is that the overall atmosphere of the game. The game is cartoon-looking but that doesn’t mean that everything looks childish. You can run into huge elites that look stunning and powerful. I have on multiple occasions run past an elite and  stopped playing for a minute and just looked at them. Most of the people on my realm are also very friendly and helpful. If you ever have a question, you can always go to general chat and almost instantly get an answer or have someone guide you to a place you can’t find. I like the looks of the characters, mounts, areas, everything.
The game is pretty simple to understand. When it comes to selecting talents for whatever role you’re playing, most anyone can use common sense to pick the best talents for that character. And like I said, the community is very friendly for the most part. So if you go into a dungeon with the wrong gear equipped, or the wrong talents selected, nine times out of ten the people in your party will politely tell you and offer their opinions on what you should do to improve.
There is a lot you can do in this game. You can do PvP to get conquest points or dungeons to get honor points for various different things,  such as rare gear, mounts, items, weapons, etc. You can join or create a guild and attempt to become one of the highest ranking guilds within the realm, or just meet and make a bunch of new friends. Leveling and getting new talents are also very fun to do.

Cons: With each expansion Blizzard comes out with, they make the game more and more simple. For example, there used to be a ton of choices between different talents in older versions of WoW. With its most recent release, Pandaria, there are only 6 talents that you can choose. Since I have played the game for a while now, it broke my heart to see how many talents I lost and the things I couldn’t do anymore. They said that they did it so players wouldn’t get as confused and yelled at as much. While their intentions were good, I really hated when they made this decision. It isn’t that hard to choose which talents to pick, like I said most people can just use common sense.
This is something very simple and insignificant that most people wouldn’t even get bothered by, but this annoys me to no end. When you become exalted to a certain area the maximum amount that you can have is 999. Seriously? You couldn’t make it an even 1,000? Just something small that annoys me sometimes.
Another annoying thing is the extremely low chance of ever getting a drop with a rare item, pet, mount, gear, whatever it may be. I can definitely see why some prefer this, it makes you feel all the more ecstatic when you get the item and it wouldn’t be a unique thing to have if everyone could get the drop easily. It’s just that I don’t have the patience for that at times.

Guild Wars 2

Pros: First, and most importantly, this game is free after you buy it. You don’t need to pay any monthly subscription, you just play. This game also has a nifty feature called fast travel. Basically you can open up the map and instantly travel to any way point you have discovered. It’s also really cheap too. Another interesting thing about the map is that if you are in a party with a friend of yours they can draw on the map so you can plan a route on how to get to your destination or whatever you may need it for.
The graphics are also another major benefit to this particular game. There is a lot of detail and it looks more realistic than other games. But it also has fantasy-like looking areas and creatures, but again, the graphics of the game make these look more realistic than they would in other games.
I personally love the fact that Guild Wars 2 has a lot more options for character customization. It’s very hard to find someone who looks exactly like your character, which makes you feel a lot more unique whilst playing this MMO.
Another thing I love about this game is that if you’re a lower level than your friend and you want to play with them this game allows your friend to play with you and still get a decent amount of experience points towards their next new level. Each area is divided by levels, so when your friend walks into that area their level will go down to the highest level possible in that area. This makes it so you and your friend can continue to play side by side without them smiting every creature in sight with one hit.
There is also an interesting new factor with the auction house. You can access the auction house and buy or sell whenever you want in the game. One doesn’t have to travel to any specific area in the game to access it anymore, which is quite convenient. To add on to that note, since people are not obtaining gold, money in Guild Wars 2, illegally as often, there isn’t too many ridiculously priced items in the auction house.
The final thing I will talk about is the combat system. The skills you have depend on what weapon you’re using and your profession. There are ten skills you can have at once, with multiple skills within each section. The player is only allowed to chose one skill from each section at a time, so it makes the game more strategic. The player’s decision on what skill to choose depends on what they’re doing, so they have to think carefully. I personally love this and think it makes the game even more entertaining.

Cons: One of the things that disappointed me the most was the fact that there are no mounts present in the game, and the developers don’t plan on adding them into the game what-so-ever. They justify this with fast travel, which I admit is very useful and efficient, but I enjoy the feeling of obtaining the beast and making him my steed. It also makes your character look more powerful when they’re riding a giant drake. Also, since you cannot obtain a mount in this game, you are stuck running all the time instead of getting to places faster on a mount, which I really do not like.
Another con is that although you don’t need to pay for the game monthly you have to pay for other things. For example you only have a certain amount of slots for different characters. Once you fill them up you have to buy new slots. Or you have to pay for some in-game items like companions, little creatures that follow you around wherever you go.

I love both of these games and think that if anyone is even slightly interested in them they should definitely give them a shot.
