The New York Yankees sit at the top in baseball history with 27 World Series wins. For years the Yankees have been the best team but because of the World Series drought, people have been second guessing their superiority. Although some people don’t believe it, I feel the Yankees are the best franchise in sports history because of their championship history, their global brand, and the legends of the game.
The New York Yankees are known for being winners. They currently have the best all time winning percentage and record in Major League Baseball (MLB), with a winning percentage of .570 and a record of 10,905-8,238 wins to losses. In 1903 the Yankees started out as The New York Highlanders getting their name because they were originally located at the highest point in Manhattan. On January 3rd, 1920, New York took the contract of star pitcher and outfielder Babe Ruth. This move not only changed the franchise, but also changed the course of baseball history. The 1920s started a long run of unbelievable success that lasted more than 40 years and led to 20 World Series championships. They made 6 World Series appearances and won 3 in the 1920s. Through the 1930s and 1940s the Yankees won 9 out of 10 World Series appearances.
Through all this success, the 1950s may have been their best years yet. They made 8 World Series and won 6, before they finally had a losing season in 1965. With age catching up to their star players, winning became a struggle. The Yankees struggled through the 60s and 70s. In the late 1990s they began to rebuild with a bunch of new homegrown players. From the 90s to the early 2000s, the Yankees only managed to win 5 World Series before entering a slump. The Yankees currently hold 27 World Series titles with 41 American League pennants in franchise history. The Yankees has the most wins, followed by the St. Louis Cardinals with 11, and the Boston Red Sox with only 9 World Series wins.
The New York Yankees as a whole are a globally known brand. From the streets of New York City to all the way in small towns in rural Bulgaria, the interlocking “NY” is globally known. The hats that are sold have not only become a piece of sports memorabilia, but also a fashion statement across the world. Millions are sold to tourists and celebrities, often as a recognizable symbol for the USA and New York City. They are the leading sellers of licensed gear across the MLB with merchandise and apparel. Their merchandise is known to be constantly sold out. Retailers like Lids and New Era Cap have reported that Yankees hats are the most purchased and the ones that they always have to restock.
Another big thing about the Yankees is they have created a global rivalry. It always comes down to the Yankees or Red Sox. This rivalry has been around for more than 120 years and has become one of the fiercest and oldest matchups in American sports. This all started back in the 1920s when what is known as “The Curse of the Bambino.” In the 1920s the Red Sox were the dominant team in baseball, winning five of the first 15 World Series. However, this was all because of star player Babe Ruth. After Boston’s owner sold their star player to the New York Yankees, it was all downhill from there. The Yankees went on to win dozens of championships, and the Red Sox endured an 86-year title drought. One peak moment in the rivalry was “The Boston Massacre” in 1978. The Yankees swept Boston in a crucial late season, four game series in Boston, wiping out Boston’s lead in the division to force a one game playoff. In the 2003 ALCS, the rivalry reached a peak when Yankees infielder Aaron Boone hit a walk off home run in game 7. This was followed by the infamous bench clearing brawl. In 2004 there was a turning point where Boston did the impossible by overcoming a 3-0 series deficit to defeat the Yankees. They finally shattered “The Curse” and won their first World Series since 1918. The Yankees were then given the nickname “The Evil Empire” by then Red Sox owner Larry Lucchino. Lucchino stated in an interview, “The Evil Empire extends its tentacles even into Latin America.” Soon after the Yankees swooped in and stole free agent, Cuban pitching sensation, Jose Contreras. The Yankees fully embraced the nickname when they started playing the “Imperial March” at home games over the loud speaker.
Over the years the New York Yankees have been packed with star players and legends. The Yankees have 22 retired uniform numbers to honor the 24 legends in franchise history. They have the most retired numbers in Major League Baseball history. Number 1 is retired and belongs to Billy Martin. He was the Yankees second baseman from 1950-1957. He had a .257 career batting average and was an elite performer in the post season. He won 4 World Series titles in that time frame. He batted .333 in the World Series, making a game saving catch in game 7 of the 1952 World Series. He was also a manager after he retired from 1975-1988. Number 2 belongs to Derek Jeter, who is a 5 times World Series champion, 14 times MLB All Star. He was a World Series MVP in 2000, as well as a 5 times Gold Glove winner and 5 times Silver Slugger. He also ranks high on the Yankees all time hits list, with 3,465 hits ranking 6th in MLB. The most known Yankee legend, Babe Ruth, has retired number 3. He played 22 seasons from 1914 to 1935 and is widely known as the greatest and most influential player in MLB history. He won 3 World Series with Boston before the famous trade to New York. After joining the Yankees he won 4 more World Series and anchored the 1927 “Murders Row” lineup. In 1927, Ruth hit 60 home runs in a single season. This record stood for 34 years, before it was broken by future Yankee legend, Aaron Judge. Judge is still an active player and current Yankee captain. Judge is the Yankees right fielder. Known for his height and unstoppable power, he is a 3 time American League MVP and holds the AL single season home run record with 62 home runs.
The Yankees are arguably the best team in baseball. They hold the best record of all time in MLB history, and are known for their successful championship history. The Yankees are a widely known brand, popular in different countries. They also have a ton of well known and successful players. The Yankees are the best team in baseball history.
