Service builds character

Service+builds+character

By Silvia Colangelo, Grade 7

Mr. Berry gathered the 7th and 8th graders in the auditorium on March 8th to announce a community service opportunity.  He first asked which character traits are built through service.  8th grader Sara LaRocca suggested responsibility.  Responsibility is when you help those who depend on you, follow through on an objective, plan your time and listen.  7th grader Julia Carlsen identified kindness as an important trait; kindness is when you understand how others feel and get to see how you improve their lives during a bad time.  8th grader Jose Dias brought up leadership; leadership is required to inspire a group to get things done faster and easier based on your experience.  8th grader Violette Canelli mentioned teamwork.  Working as a team makes things more efficient and you have more fun than working independently.  7th grader Christian Chase pointed out the value of awareness; it’s important to know what is happening in your area and how you can contribute.

During the summer of 2011, the Schoharie county region was hit with a horrible flood. Many people lost everything. Many people have helped to clean the mess up and to rebuild homes. These people who helped had great character.  Mr. Berry informed us that some of our junior high and high school students would have the opportunity in late April to join in the clean-up efforts and show their great character.  It was evident that students were inspired by meeting Mrs. Rockwood, a representative from Habitat for Humanity, listening to Norm Torres speak about the hope that he experienced during the clean-up in Rotterdam Junction, thinking back to when 20 high school students along with Mr. Brooks and Mr. Marcantonio went to Schoharie last fall, and watching a video of how other young people from nearby Union College pitched in and helped; the proper sign up forms had been returned to fill the 20 spots for junior high students by 9 a.m.   High school students have been instructed to see Mr. Marcantonio ASAP if they have an interest in helping with the effort.

When people see or hear what happens to others in the area, they should take action to help. This could happen to anyone.  Mr. Berry asked the question, “What if it was your home?”   If it were your livelihood, you would really want someone to help you get through it.  Look for ways to build your good character in the school and in your home if you weren’t able to go this time. Be responsible and kind.  Be a leader, a team player and aware individual.  You will have character and your willingness to serve ensures you will be sought after in the future.

I recently drove through this area the other week, the areas near creeks and rivers had houses that were half fallen over. It was very sad to see. And to think that this all happened over the summer, and they still havent rebuilt it.
