Cotton Candy Katy and “California Gurls”

By: Jessica Demarest

Last summer Katy Perry released her latest album, entitled Teenage Dream. The album cover features artwork by the uncle of Molly and John Pokrzywka, Will Cotton, a famous artist and sculptor.

Will Cotton grew up in the Mohawk Valley area and currently resides in New York City. Will generally does oil canvas paintings. One of his paintings, Ice Cream Cavern, is featured in the book 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die. Will also enjoys baking. He often combines the two activities by painting baked goods. This is part of the reason why Katy Perry was attracted to his artwork. Katy had wanted to do something candy related for awhile and upon seeing Will’s artwork she was inspired. After talking to Will via e-mail, she asked him to do something for her album artwork, and thus, Cotton Candy Katy was created. This painting is now featured on the cover of Katy’s album, Teenage Dream.

Will Cotton also worked on Katy’s “California Gurls” music video as the artistic director. The sets that were featured in the video were based off of some of Will’s paintings and he created the game board that Snoop Dog, who is featured in the video, is playing on. The game board was then brought to life on a much larger scale. To find out more about Will Cotton’s role in the California Gurls music video visit Youtube and watch Katy Perry – The Making of “California Gurls”.
