Closed Campus Policy Survey

By: Joe English

As the results of last week’s Closed Campus Policy survey began pouring in, it became apparent early on where the sympathies of the student body lay.  With just 5 kids in the entire school casting votes supporting the policy, it was obvious that the proposed policy was overwhelmingly unpopular among students.

However, despite the decisive results presented to the Board of Education prior to the vote, the Closed Campus Policy still passed 4-3.  Board members Mrs. Cheryl Smith, Joan Slagle, Janet Glenn, and Mark Pribis argued that the policy was crucial in the fight to keep students safe.  On the other hand, Mr. John Sutton, Bradley Rook, and Terry Ostrander voted against the policy, arguing that students need to be given the chance to grow up and develop responsibility as juniors and seniors.

The fact that several of the Board members were able to brush aside the student body’s opinion so easily disturbed many people in attendance that night.  Despite the students’ undeniable opposition to the policy and hard facts to back up the opinion, the votes cast to pass the policy last week showed exactly how much those opinions meant to our Board members.

Here are some quotes that stood out from the “Comments” section on the student surveys:

“This place is going to Hell…”

“We’re not two-year-olds anymore, let us grow up!”

“The lunch room would become very crowded without Chuck’s, and it teaches students valuable time-management skills.”

“If parents do not want their kids to go to Chuck’s, then parents shouldn’t sign the permission slip instead of ruining it for everyone…”

“We are high schoolers, you should trust us to make the right decisions by now.”

“It’s ridiculous how many restrictions our school has…”
