Students who joined the Battle of the Books in the fall were given the book When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed. They were given about a month to read and analyze the book. The first battle was Friday, November 7th and the 7th graders defeated the 6th graders.
Then for the month of November, the students were given the book Holes by Louis Sachar. The battle happened on December 5th and the 6th graders won against the 7th graders in a final round!
When asked what inspired Mrs.Heath to start the club, she shared, “I participated in it at my last job and I thought it would be fun to do it here.” She followed up to say, “I feel like it’s going good here and I think everyone is enjoying it.” When asked how she decides what books you assign the students to read, she stated, “I have done a survey on my Google Classroom and I have read some of them that I think the students will enjoy reading.”
To make the questions for each battle Mrs. Heath reads the book twice. She said, “The first time I just read it and the second time I read it again and take notes on a piece of paper that I will turn into questions.” She explains that tries to balance the questions: “Some are tricky and others are easy. I make a range and mix it up so only one team gets the tricky ones and the other team gets the easy ones.” She confirms all answers in the book.
The current record for the teams is 1-1. The tiebreaker to see who will continue to be in the lead is in January. The students are currently reading the sequel to Holes, Small Steps by Louis Sacher. Then, in February there will be a teachers vs. students battle!
Who will take home the victory? TEACHERS OR STUDENTS?????!!!!!!!
Mrs. Heath shared the 5th graders and the middle schoolers are going to battle in May most likely.

It took me a while to figure out all the questions to ask Mrs. Heath. Also, finding a time that was able to work in both mine and Mrs. Heath’s schedule.
