(Warning: Not all holidays, including even national holidays, are here; there are just too many to talk about and this article will get long and boring. We apologize for the inconvenience.)
You know those holidays you spend all year waiting for? Easter, Christmas, Hanukkah, Halloween, Summer, Valentine’s day, National Pi Day, maybe even George Washington’s Birthday? Well this isn’t the article for you. Bye, see you later. Here we discuss underappreciated holidays!
Let’s begin at the beginning of the year, January. How many of you people are biting your nails waiting for this unacknowledged holiday? Martin Luther King Jr Day. Though some may just think of it as a day off from school, he was actually a great man; he was a big part of the civil rights movement. I’d like to point out that Martin Luther King Jr Day (MLK) is on the third Monday of January; it celebrates his birth. Did you know MLK went to college at only fifteen! There are many reasons why we all celebrate this day… or at least we should be. You can celebrate this day by borrowing a book about him from your local library or even buying one, visiting a museum, or talking to someone about his accomplishments. You can also look to see if anything is done locally to honor his accomplishments and spirit.
During the month of February, people are focused on a holiday called Valentine’s Day. Some are focused buying flowers for their loved ones, but we’re not here for that. Did you know there’s actually another holiday in February? It’s Washington’s Birthday. I know I said this was appreciated, but do enough people actually appreciate it? This day is on February 22nd, and celebrates one of our founding fathers. He also was our first president, and one of the reasons we are a republic. So you should celebrate this day by reading books and learning about him. And if you want a monarchy instead of presidency, you should move somewhere like the UK.
Check back next month to see what other underappreciated holidays there are to learn some new facts about!
