Galway comes together

Thank you to the Galway students, athletes, coaches and teachers who participated!

Students, athletes, coaches, parents, teachers and community members all came together to support suicide awareness at the 3rd annual Andrew Izzo Memorial 5k Run/Walk.  On Sunday, October 1st at 9:00 AM, the group gathered at the district bus garage for the start of the event. Austin Izzo, Andrew’s brother, thanked the members of the Scholarship Committee, and others that made the event possible. Austin reminded participants to use the signs along the 5K route to start conversations about the contributing factors of suicide, and to remember there is always someone there to who cares.

As stated on their website http://www.fund4andrew.org/, ‘The Andrew C. Izzo Scholarship Fund was started in 2013 by a group of family and friends who wanted to keep Andrew’s memory alive. Every year they award a deserving senior from Galway High School a scholarship in Andrew’s name. Through the generosity and participation of our community, they are able to give out this award each year as well as benefit suicide awareness programs. Recipients are solely based on nomination write-ups from the community…Recipients embody the qualities that we all love and miss about Andrew: compassion to those in need, fair and respectful with a sense of fellowship, care and concern and consideration of others, and a loyal friend displaying integrity and reliability with a kind heart and a generous spirit.’

Many students participated with their teams: cross country, boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer, from modified to varsity, were all represented. Congratulations to Holden Decker and Ella Decker, the top student finishers, and to Mrs. Prehn, the fastest teacher!

And remember, there is always someone there to talk to, someone who cares.
