Rocket Day takes off!

GALWAY—One large field. Gallons of water. Dozens of well-crafted rockets. That’s all you need for Galway’s highly anticipated Rocket Day.

Saturday, November 1, students in Mr. Darlington’s physics classes brought their rockets to be tested. In addition, junior chemistry students, and other member of the Galway community also participated. Morgan Ritter, aka MoBoard (short for Mother Board), managed the day’s rounds and keeping track of all the data. She had to be sure that all rockets were launched and then compute which rockets made the top 5.

MoBoard explained, “We did two rounds and then took the average of the distances to find out the top 5 rockets. The top 5 were Serena, (created by Garrett Crawford and Bridget Maloney), The Silver Bullet (Jacob Thompson), the Stang (Brendon Kondrat and Jeff Kline), K Bye #6 (Emily Zawisa and Dan Diaz), and the Golden Comet (Brad Hoffman and Stine Tjemsland).

After the Winner’s Round, the stats are as follows:
1st place- The Stang, 194 yards
2nd place- Silver Bullet, 187 yards
3rd place- The Golden Comet, 185 yards
4th place- Serena, 177 yards
5th place- K Bye #6, 173 yards

The farthest the regular rockets went was 213 yards and that was by The Stang, which earned creators Jeff Kline and Brendon Kondrat the coveted Golden Rocket Award.

In the long rocket category, Amy Engel’s A3, went 236 yards. There were two rockets that blew up, but MoBoard did not divulge the names of the creators.

“It was very cold, but we had a good turn out and a lot of people said it was fun! I saw the cutest kids who had a rocket fly which was awesome,” MoBoard commented. Interns of the E-Way Store set up shop selling hot cocoa and cider, which was much appreciated in the chilly, breezy conditions.
