Congratulations to the Class of 2014!

GALWAY– An auditorium filled with family, friends, teachers and community members honored the new Galway graduates with a standing ovation today at the High School.

Historian Erin Breckenridge, Salutatorian Alana Phelps and Valedictorian Andrew Wright all gave very engaging and humorous speeches. Class President Amy South and Vice President Jeanine Messak presented the class gift: a Class of 2014 Eagle flag, and two special paintings. Senior Autumn Antos painted a tree on two canvases, and all the seniors added their signature and thumbprints as the leaves on the trees. In addition, as each graduate crossed the stage to receive their diplomas, they handed Principal Healey either a bag of seeds or a small planting pot. This was in honor of the district greenhouse project that has been revived this year.

Principal Healey and Superintendent Shine also shared their words of congratulations and wisdom with the graduates. The senior class chose their class adviser, Jennifer Gerber, to address the class as well. Her inspiring words, “Begin again,” will surely be remembered by the graduates long after today.

The music presented reminded everybody that a stellar music program is an important part of education at Galway. The brass ensemble was directed and accompanied by teacher Gary Barrow, and featured current students, seniors Brady Smith and Sam Flinton, junior Gabrielle Urban, and recent graduate, Melissa MacDonald. Galway’s talented Chamber Singers performed two songs under the direction of teacher Mellenie Booth. The graduates lent their voices to the second song, the theme song from the popular show “Friends,” “I’ll Be There For You.”

Diplomas were presented by School Board President Thomas Rumsey, assisted by Mr. Healey and guidance counselor Kathy Morck. Chemistry and Physics teacher, Kris Darlington, took photos of the entire event and will be posting them soon on the Galway Central School District Flickr page.

The entire event was streamed live online and recorded by GTV. Technicians worked tirelessly on Friday before graduation to set up the system. Seniors Brady Smith and Cody Izzo, and sophomore Jacob Ernst worked for many hours testing and preparing for graduation today. Technicians for the ceremony today were Jacob Ernst, and Galway graduate, Graham Northup.

GTV expects to have DVDs of the ceremony for sale by the end of July. The cost is only $20, and they can be picked up at the High School, or GTV will ship them for an extra $5.
