Masterminds Team Advances in Playoffs

The Galway varsity Masterminds team advanced to the second round of playoffs Wednesday, April 30th. After finishing the season with a 7-5 record including victories over Broadalbin-Perth, Gloversville, Mayfield, Johnstown, Dolgeville, and Amsterdam, freshmen Jacob Thompson, Jack Noonan, Rachel Reichard, Tim Webb-Horvath, Brooke Martin, and sophomore Matt Zehl qualified to go to the first round of playoff games in Schalmont. Martin also finished the season with the second-highest amount of individual points in the state, 705. During the first round of playoffs, held at Schalmont High School, Galway played Troy, Schalmont, Gloversville, and Hoosick Falls. Playoffs are in a “double elimination” format, allowing each team two losses before being out as opposed to the more often-seen single loss.

Galway was victorious over Schalmont, Gloversville, and Hoosick Falls, but lost to Troy. However, due to the double elimination format and their three wins, Galway was allowed to continue on to the next round of playoffs on May 27th at RPI.

Last Saturday, May 3rd, one of Galway’s games against Academy of Holy Names was broadcast on public access. Galway beat AHN by ten points. Galway hopes to perform well in the next round of playoffs, in which their first game will be against Columbia. Either way, Galway has given a strong performance in its first year of Masterminds.
