On the mat

So contrary to what people may think, wrestling is a very aggressive sport that requires a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment. Galway has a very good wrestling program and many teams actually fear going against us. Throughout all of the victories and triumphs over the other teams, the athletes still mostly remain humble people and work well as a team. The coaches Mr. Sartin and Mr. Culbert do a wonderful job, as well, of making sure everyone stays modest and recognizes their mistakes as well as the things they did right.

Throughout the year, the boys have a tournament just about every Saturday which means they need to be at the school around 6:00 to 6:30 in the morning…. on a SATURDAY! So they bundle up get to the school and wrestle until about 7:00 at night sometimes and occasionally don’t get home until around midnight. Seth Carter, a senior this year, said that his favorite tournament is the Greg Rockwood tournament. Carter says this is his favorite because it is at Galway so a lot of people from Galway come to watch. It is also in memory of Coach Rockwood who was a former wrestling coach at Galway. John Mulligan, another senior at Galway, said that his favorite team to wrestle against is Johnstown because they can be a challenging team.

According to Seth and John, both agree that the hardest part of wrestling is all the hard work that goes in at every practice and staying with the sport. This is a sport that can be very discouraging but all of these guys have stuck with it and that in itself is hard to accomplish. Carter said, “It is all about hard work. If you want to be successful, you can’t give up.”

Even though they are humble and they concentrate really hard, they still have fun. Things such as the Last Supper, which is the last “real meal” that they are supposed to have throughout the wrestling season, gives the team to have fun and bond more with their team members, old and new. At the Last Supper, they all eat as much spaghetti and cookies as they can, get in the hot tub and then play a huge game of football. Even though it was snowing and windy at this year’s, they played so hard they had a pile of jackets on the ground.

So, overall, they are a rambunctious group of guys who, yeah, may get in trouble occasionally but are dedicated, hardworking and caring. Sure, wrestling may not look like much of a sport but it can be one of the most challenging and yet these boys and coaches still manage to make it look easy.

I give props to the wrestlers and wish them the best of luck throughout the season. Good job of sticking with it and I strongly encourage to anyone who can, to go to a meet or a tournament and watch these talented young men do what they love.
