GLOVERSVILLE–The Galway Varsity Masterminds team competed in its first-ever meet on Tuesday, October 29. Masterminds is a quiz-like academic challenge with questions ranging from classic literature to current events to science to pop culture. The Galway team consists of five freshmen: Tim Webb-Horvath, Rachel Reichard, Jacob Thompson, Jack Noonan, and Brooke Martin.

The meet was held at Gloversville High School. There are seven schools competing in this league: Broadalbin-Perth, Amsterdam, Johnstown, Dolgeville, Gloversville, Mayfield, and Galway.  At each of the meets, which are held approximately once per month, each team competes against two other teams. By the end of the year, each team will have competed against all of the other teams twice. Once a year, a meet will be filmed at Proctor’s Theater in Schenectady and be broadcast on local television.

At this meet, Galway first competed against Johnstown and then Dolgeville. Though Galway lost both games, they played well, eventually coming in with a score of 110-160 against the all-senior team of Johnstown and 95-125 against the Dolgeville team, which was also mostly made up of seniors. All in all, it was a solid first match for the Galway team, which continues to remain hopeful about success in the future.
