Board Appreciation Day

Board+Appreciation+Day

GALWAY– To celebrate Board Appreciation Day and thank them for their service, GTV staffers Jacob Ernst and Evan Carlson visited the elementary school to ask some students there “What does a Board member do?” They spoke to students in Mrs. Page’s kindergarten class and found that most of them were excited to be on camera.

“It was great to go back to the elementary school. This was a new experience for us because every little kid isn’t the same and you never what they’re going to say. There was a lot of editing involved. It was quite astonishing that we were able to accomplish this project in just two days. There was no time for mess-ups,” Ernst commented. “We plan to continue our interviews with the younger kids throughout the year.”

When trying to think of a way to thank the Board, Mrs. Donovan (Galway’s Athletic Director and Assistant Principal) read quotes about eagles. The one that stood out was “An eagle that soars about must have strong wings.” Thinking about wings, she had the inspiration to make a special wing hot sauce with the name “Soaring to the Future Eagle Eye Hot Sauce.” Each Board member received their own jar featuring the special label.

Mrs. Donovan explained, “We made the hot sauce with fresh ingredients using Emeril’s recipe and added our own secret ingredients.  It is a 5 alarm hot sauce.  Our next step is to merge the resources of the athletic department and the greenhouses to make sauces, relishes, etc. and sell at games, along with the vegetables.”

As for the video, “We were going to have the students make cards, but we thought this would be more fun,” added Donovan.

The Board of Education members of Galway are President Thomas Rumsey, Vice President Dennis Schaperjahn, Jay Anderson, Melodye Eldeen, Laura Sakala and Joan Slagle.
