The Galway varsity wrestling team accomplished a great feat in coming in 2nd place out of 16 team at the Greg Rockwood memorial tournament; held at Galway High School. With having 8 out of 11 competitors place in the top 4 in their respective weight classes, and a pair of injuries and several controversial calls keep the other 3 wrestlers from the placing round, it was an all-around stellar performance. Nico Riccio wrestled well at 106, earning 3 convincing wins to earn himself a spot in the finals. It was in the finals that Riccio lost 4-2 to Adirondack’s Derek Spann. Adirondack would go on to win the tournament team title. At 113, Jordan Sartin wrestled very well, losing a close match to Cassidy White or Corinth in the semifinals, and wrestling back all the way to 4th place after losing a close match to Salem’s Luke Fronhofer. At 120 pounds, Dean Poulin’s tournament came to a brief and unfortunate end as he broke his ankle wrestling Cohoes’ Connor Franzese, eventual tournament runner-up. At 132 pounds, Jay Oakes had a solid day, winning the tournament title for a second year in a row. After a rough quarterfinal match against Schenectady’s Nick Wagenbaugh, he improved on the day with a tech fall in the semi-finals, and a 6-1 win over Corinth’s Ryan Matuszak in the finals. At 138 Steven Culbert also had a good day, reaching the finals before losing to 2012 Section II runner-up Kyle Mulcahy of Corinth. The score was 12-5. At 145 pounds Noah Wicks came through with a solid 3rd place performance, beating Scotia’s Cody Cooke 6-0 in his consolation-finals match. At 152 pounds, Kyle Moffatt also had an unfortunate ending to a good day of wrestling, injuring out of the tournament the match before wrestling for 3rd place. At 160 pounds, Ryan Pappalau wrestled well to earn himself a spot in the finals against Granville’s Brad Perry. Pappalau grinded out a tough 6 minute match, ultimately taking 2nd place after losing 10-1. At 170 pounds, John Mulligan wrestled very well and earned himself 3rd place defeating Johnstown’s Austin Brand 3-2. Andrew Gilchrist had a great day at 182 pounds, taking 4th place while wrestling Schenectady’s Elijah Washington. At 195 pounds, Seth Carter wrestled tough all day, and lost a match a way from placing in the top 4 to be eliminated. Overall, Galway wrestling had its best performance at this tournament in recent years, and has continued its dominance in competition, despite several injuries.
