The challenge to 7th and 8th graders was to give voice to winter in a poem or rap. The following poems were selected to go to the finals from the poems submitted on time. Vote for your favorite poem from below. The poet whose poem receives the most vote will win free books, EMC treats, and have his/her poem read on GTV after break. If you want to post your own original poem that gives winter a voice beginning with the line “Winter said…” but using a synonym for said, we will be choosing a winner from the comment section to receive a free book, E-way store treats, and possibly have his/her work read on GTV too!

Winter whispers snowflakes to the ground
Snowshoes are the way to get around
Snowboards carve through the snow
Snowmobiles race as fast as they can go
Kids use sleds to go down hills
Hot cocoa solves the Winter chills
When Winter gets mad,
He sends a blizzard out
This makes some people pout
I look at my snowmobile and get on
I say “WINTER BRING IT ON”!

I, winter exclaimed as the children cheered wahoo
‘Its December 1, I have work to do
As I came over the trees the parents were mad
As the children were happy and glad
So I sprinkled snow on the ground
As the children sledded and had snowball fights
It started to become night
As they went inside, the air became very cool
I knew that on December 2, they wouldn’t have school
So the kids all cheered Hooray for winter

Winter
Winter whispers in kids’ ears,
Forget about the presents.
Forget about the parties.
Spend time with your family,
Enjoy a day or two with friends.
Winter whispers in adults ears,
Sit down and relax.
Take the stress away.
Winter is when joy and happiness come out
And when anger and dismay vanish.

Winter Shouted
Winter shouted BRR but fun
In the snow we all will run,
Down the hill we all will ride
Off the sled we all will slide.
Winter shouted Christmastime
Carolers sing all in rhyme,
Time for the family to have some fun
But soon the snow is gone with the warm sun.
Winter shouted it’s time for me to go away,
But now it’s time for spring to come and play!
#5
Winter is a wonder land,
A gift from heaven,
Kids run and play,
They’re happy about no school,
There is winter in the air.
Winter is full of fun,
Kids like to play,
And also to sleigh,
Snow balls are flying,
Winter is here.

Winter lamented,
Don’t you see? How painful this is for me?
To watch my sister spin around like a butterfly,
Creating and loving the bright blue sky.
She sings everyday and sleeps every night
To everyone she gives a hopeful light
Whether it be about warmth or a balmy night
Summer is her name and her aim
Is to melt all traces of me away, I’m to blame
The flowers sway and swing,
“This is so much better than winter, fall and spring!
As my sister smiles and continues to shine
But beware, Sister. Soon the earth will be mine.
Winter then chided,
It’s much better when it’s cold, silly
When the air is frosty and chilly
When you can’t feel your nose
Winter’s when the wind blows
Crystalline flakes are everywhere
In your mouth, in your eyelashes, in your hair
Your breath comes out in puffy billows
And children cry like weeping willows
When, even though they have such big wishes,
Don’t get what they want for Christmas
And beauty is here in the air
So just stop and exist, stop and stare,
Just marvel at the winter, beautifully exquisite
Take a moment and visit
The magical land of winter.

Little grains of frosty white
fall from the sky, nearly in flight
When December first arrives at the door
Kids want this more and more,
when the snow falls, Christmas is near
which is just what kids want to hear,
so that they can move their wrists
and quickly jot all the items on their lists
Because there is a famous man that says, “Ho, Ho, Ho”
that only arrives when there’s snow*!

Winter screams cheer in the wind
It roars classical songs from the radios
Winter’s cold brings warm drinks next to the fire
Its presents bring curiosity into children’s eyes
Many come from far and wide to sing with great pride
all bitter becomes sweet
all unhopeful becomes hopeful
all alone feel blessed
Santa’s gentle “Ho, Ho, Ho” comforts many
Parents
children
ad all who are merry.

Winter mutters brrr I am cold
Winter exclaims am I getting old?
Winter likes to spread frost
and act like he is his own boss
When winter goes outside
All other seasons run and hide
Envying other seasons is all winter does
But he doesn’t do it just because
Sumer is sunny and it’s always warm
winter is harsh and there is always a storm
Leaves change colors and are beautiful in fall
Then winter comes and destroys them all
In spring kids run laugh and play
In winter they shovel snow all day
You may think it’s a gift to control snow
But trust me, it’s a curse, I would know
