It was around 1:50 Friday afternoon, when the news was confirmed to the players of both boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams that we would not be playing that day.  It was after reluctance and with much hesitation, as well as efforts from Coach Rob Martin, athletic director Brita Donovan, and help from the community that the games would ultimately be postponed until the next day, due to substantial rain that had the field under water.  Some good news also resulted from this, as word was given that the varsity volleyball game would still be on!  The girls’ volleyball team played a strong senior game beating the Bulldogs of Berne-Knox Westerlo 3 games to none.  A strong offence headed by both Emily Orminski and Chelsea Cucci heavily influenced the outcome of the games.  Solid defense was led by twins Emily Orminski, and defensive Libero Brittany Orminski, as well as Rachel Jones.  Defensively and offensively dominant performances by Emily Zawisa and Hayley Martin showed why in recent years, Galway’s varsity volleyball squad has been second to none in league competition.  The postponement of the soccer games until the following day was not all bad, as it allowed for increased support from soccer players that no longer had games.

It was the following day; Saturday the 20th, that the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams proved they wouldn’t let rain spoil Mrs. Donovan’s homecoming vision for this year.  The girls’ varsity soccer team kicked off Saturday’s events in a suspense-filled game against rival Northville, in which the girls played through a 20 minute overtime bout following regulation play.  The ultimate score line ended in Northville’s favor 4-3, although the girls showed strength in playing from behind a majority of the game.  After giving up a goal less than 2 minutes into the game, Kelly Phillips quickly rebounded the score shooting near post on the Northville goal keeper.  The score remained knotted until halftime when Northville struck again, this time also scoring less than 2 minutes into the half.  Several minutes later Erica Chase tied the score at 2’s.  Another exchange of goals between Northville and Galway’s Erica Chase left the score tied 3-3 at the end of regulation play.  This meant the girls’ would go into an automatic 20 minute overtime period, in which play remained relatively even until Northville scored with little time left to play.  This left the final score at 4-3, with a strong effort put forth by the whole girls’ team.

With only one game left to play, the Galway boys’ varsity squad had something left to prove; after a tough loss in the girls’ game, and a piece of the WAC North league title on the line.  The lights went on as the sun went down, and the first half kicked off.  Play remained even for a majority of the first half, with Northville gaining several shots on goal, all of which were snuffed out by goalkeeper Evan Ceroalo and sweeper Brady Smith.  Galway also earned several chances on goal, most of which were easily saved by the Northville defense.  Galway struck first with a Josh Bailey goal coming with 2.9 seconds left in the first half.  The second half started off on a different key, with Northville coming out fired up and controlling play in the opening minutes.  4 and a half minutes into the second half, Northville was now on the scoreboard; off a cross to a midfielder that was free of his man in the Galway defensive end.  The tempo quickly changed after the goal, with Galway controlling most of the play.  Again Northville struck, with a long shot that went in just wide of Ceroalo’s hands.  Galway struggling to create offence, the teams volleyed back and forth with offensive efforts shut down by both sets of defense.  With 6 minutes left in the game, Galway earned a foul 30 yards from the goal.  The Northville keeper managed to save a shot from midfielder Casey Mello, although the ball was left loose in the box.  Galway’s Jay Oakes was there to finish the shot, sending the ball far post into the Northville goal.  With the game now tied at 2’s, 6 strong minutes of play followed, with neither team being able to find the net.  With the scores tied, the game entered overtime, with two 10 minute sudden overtime periods to be played.  With the game on the line, and a piece of the WAC league championship in question, Galway entered the overtime with controlling play.  After a scoreless 10 minutes, Galway again lit up the scoreboard with a final goal coming from Kyle Moffatt midway through the second overtime.  A ball bounced free in the box off a Galway corner kick, and Moffatt was there to finish it far post.

I’m glad homecoming was great and I’m glad everyone that went had an awesome time. I wish i had gone to my senior homecoming but I had other plans. I hope the next homecoming and the one after that are just as good as this year’s and that next year’s freshmen will have just as much fun. I think Mrs. Donovan is doing a great job this year!
