Art Portfolio

You might have been one of the people who was looking forward to taking the class Art Portfolio. This class taught students how to create an art portfolio, which is a necessary part of applying to a college for art. But unfortunately the class was taken out of the schedule due to the budget cuts.

For anyone who is thinking about taking an art course or majoring in art in college, this class would have been helpful to create a portfolio. Miss Mierzwa, who taught the class before it was cut, used to share helpful tips on making an art portfolio with her students and explained that in the past, the class hosted an art show at the National Bottle Museum in Ballston Spa. She said some of the students even sold some of their artwork.

In the class she said the students had to make an artist statement, a biography, 15-20 quality pieces of art, a resume, a cover, a self portrait, and to have and/or know five current events in the art world. The pieces of art should be the students’ best work, all in the required presentation format, with reflections for each.

The pieces of art were classified in the categories of observational art, personal art, and home exam. Observational art is a drawing or painting that uses a still life, landscape, or figure model. Personal art is work done at home, by yourself and includes basically any media. The home exam is work that is required by the college that you are applying for.

If you, or anyone else you know, would like to get more information on making an art portfolio, www.artschools.com is a great resource. The website goes into detail on the topic, as well as showing different art schools.
