GALWAY– The sound of school bells and locker door slams has not only brought the start of the school year, but the start of Galway High School’s Science Club. Science Club is an extracurricular activity that gives students a multitude of opportunities ranging from being able to participate in various competitions to getting the chance to volunteer. Anyone is invited to join the club and it can also help for college applications where they look for people who are well rounded. Join us on September 13th for our first meeting in Mrs. Flores’ room after school!

Competitions are a major part of Science Club, but in order to be able to attend those numbers are needed. We are calling on underclassmen to become a part of a wonderful club that will help you with the rest of your High School career. It is not necessary for each member to go to or be a part of every event. Science Olympiad occurs in the winter and students take part in tests and hands on activities in subjects ranging from Forensics to Astronomy. Science Bowl is a competition where a group of five students go against another school and are asked questions. Each student has a buzzer and must buzz in quickly as time continues to tick down. Envirothon allows students to explore ways to keep our earth greener while solving a problem and coming up with a solution that they must then present. The students then take tests in Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife, Current Issue and Soils.

A main goal for the Science Club is to allow the students to take responsibility in the club and be able to learn leadership roles. One way it is able to do that is by keeping up with the recycling. The club recycles bottles, cans and paper and uses the money received from this to fund scholarships as well as field trip possibilities to places where there is a Genetic update conference, stem cell research and Albany Nano technology. The volunteer aspect of Science Club are for events such as Science Saturday where members will set up stations for elementary children to come and be introduced to the world of science and the E-waste recycling where electronics are recycled.

Science Club allows students to come and enjoy science in a different way then you may in class. It gives you many opportunities to try new things in a fun way. If you have any interest in science or just in learning new things come to our first meeting Thursday!
