Tim Tebow Introduced as a Jet

Tim Tebow Introduced as a Jet

By Cody Marshall-Sultan of Sports

NEW YORK–On Monday, the New York Jets held a press conference for their new quarterback, former Denver Bronco Tim Tebow. The move came just one day after the Denver Broncos signed future-Hall of Famer Peyton Manning to a 5-year deal after what was a long and exciting process for the former Indianapolis Colts star.

Tebow was acquainted with the New York media quickly as he was surrounded by numerous cameras and reporters. Unfortunately, Tebow was alone at the podium as head coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum, and owner Woody Johnson were all in Palm Springs, Florida for the NFL meetings that were taking place.

The Jets plan for now is for Tebow to play a backup role to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez who, coincidentally, had met Tebow at Southern Cal when Tebow was deciding where he would play college football. According to Tebow, Sanchez was his guide while visiting the college. Tebow is also expected to run the wildcat offense, a formation originally brought to the NFL by the Jets new offensive coordinator, Tony Sporano. Rex Ryan expects Tebow to be in on around 20 plays each game. When asked how he felt about this, Tebow responded by saying that all he wants to do is help his new organization in any way he can.

If Tebow’s unorthodox success continues, he may just be the extra piece that the Jets need to get to the Super Bowl. In Mark Sanchez’s first two years, the Jets managed to make it to the AFC Championship Game, but fell both times, once to the Colts and once to the Steelers. However, last year Sanchez and the Jets stayed home and watched the postseason, as it was Tebow leading the Broncos to the playoffs where he stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime.

Another issue surrounding Tebow is whether or not he will remain a quarterback for much longer in his career. When asked about this, Tebow responded, “…I’m a football player first, and then a quarterback. But that’s always been my dream and what I’ve wanted to be is a quarterback,” Tebow said, “…”I’m excited to be a Jet and help this team in any way I can in whatever my role is, and if I can expand that role, I’m going to try to do that.”

In 23 games, Tebow has thrown for 17 touchdowns, while rushing for another 12. He has completed 47.3% of his passes for a total of 2,383 yards. His 887 yards rushing are the 4th-highest total by any quarterback within the first two years of their career. If Tebow’s success in the ground game continues, the Jets may be a favorite in the AFC this season.
