Lady Eagles Survive Scare from Mayfield, 34-23

Lady Eagles Survive Scare from Mayfield, 34-23

By Cody Marshall-The Sultan of Sports

Every year, it seems that the biggest game played on Galway’s home floor is the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game. The players and cheerleaders wear as much pink as possible and the donations build up through out the night. On Wednesday night, Galway was once again supporting the American Cancer Society and its hopes of finding a cure for cancer. The Lady Eagles entered the game at 4-4 in the league, good enough for 3rd behind Fort Plain and Canajoharie. Overall, the Lady Eagles were 6-6. Their opponent, the Mayfield Lady Panthers entered with an 0-8 league record and 0-11 overall record. This was the second meeting between the two teams and, on paper, it looked like Galway was going to have an easy night. Especially after a 50-21 drubbing of the Lady Panthers back on December 13th.

However, the Lady Panthers were determined to pull the upset. Kendra McDonald started off hot for the Lady Eagles, scoring 4 of the team’s 6 points in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles led 6-5 after one period of play. However, the Lady Panthers managed to pull things together and take advantage of sloppy play by the Lady Eagles, en route to taking a 15-14 lead at the halftime break. With a one-point lead and confidence building, it looked like Mayfield would finally break into the win column. However, the Lady Eagles came storming out in the second half and outscored the Lady Panthers by a score of 20-8, winning the game 34-23.

The Lady Eagles were lead by Erica Chase and Abby Spagnola with 8 points apiece. Tegan Matthews was next with 6, followed by Morgan Ritter with 5. Seniors Kendra McDonald and Bridgid McFadden rounded out the scoring with 4 points and 3 points, respectively.

The Lady Panthers were led by Nicole Little with 13. Jesse LaVada and Jennifer Little added 3 apiece for Mayfield (0-9, 0-12). Miranda Eagan and Killian Horney contributed 2 points each in the losing effort.

The Lady Eagles are now 5-4 in the league and 7-6 overall heading into Friday night’s contest at St. Johnsville.
