GALWAY–Mrs. Korona is our new junior high school A.I.S. (Academic Intervention Services) Reading teacher. In addition to teaching 7th and 8th grade students, Mrs. Korona has some elementary students.

Mrs. Korona attended the College of St. Rose. She student taught sixth grade here with Mr. Nettleton in the fall of 2007; the current sophomores helped introduce her to the profession. Mrs. Korona didn’t need any introduction to the school though because she was a student here in Galway ten years ago. Some of her teachers are still here today such as Mr. Barkley, Mr. Maliszewski, Mrs. McDonald, Mr. Pagano, Mrs. Peters, Mrs. Wilday, Mrs. Vandenburgh, Mrs. Kalinkewicz, Mrs. Decker and Ms. Morck. When Mrs. Korona went to school here, it is was a junior/senior high school as well.

Mrs. Korona was motivated to pursue a career in teaching A.I.S. reading because she is passionate about the topic: “I love reading, in particular middle level/young adult books because they are so interesting. But more importantly I love to see kids succeed in something they struggle in.” Mrs. Korona told me that some of the teaching methods include guided reading and read alouds. In addition to reading, she values humor: “There is never a day in class where my class and I don’t laugh. I like the class to laugh and have fun learning.”

As many people may know, Mrs. Korona is having a baby boy this January; her due date is the 30th, a day before her birthday. She already has a two year old son Camden. Her husband was her high school sweetheart she met when she was just sixteen! Mrs. Korona loves to spend time with her son Camden. She enjoys helping her husband coach his soccer team. Also, Mrs. Korona likes to go camping and spend time with her family.

Now where does Mrs. Korona stand on sports…Yankees of course! But she declared that she is more of a football fan than a baseball fan. Her favorite team is the New York Jets!

So, the next time you see Mrs. Korona make sure to welcome her to Galway once again, and congratulations on her upcoming baby boy this January!
