The flooding in Schoharie County has caused a lot of damage to their community, 80% of Schoharie County has been affected by the flooding. Schoharie School was just opened Monday, a week late from its normal first day of school. “Surprisingly a total of 4 kids were absent” Mr. Brooks explained. A lot of families are homeless and living with other families out of the valley of Schoharie.

Mr. Brooks explained to me the help that Schoharie needs and what they have been doing so far to rebuild their community. “All the first floors have to be gutted; carpet floors have to be pulled up.” Mr. Brooks told me. Mr. Brooks actually went out and helped out with gutting the floors because of how much mud was in the houses. You had to actually take shovels to get the mud out of the houses and bring it out bucket by bucket. Now they are just waiting for the water to dry out of the houses and then they will spray a bleach blend on the walls and floors, it’s a very long process.

The teachers of Schoharie have come up with an idea which provides free insulation for houses in Schoharie. They are doing this on October 8th maybe 9am or 10am, Mr. Brooks doesn’t know the exact time. All the teachers are getting together to help their community rebuild. It was great how Galway could help Schoharie out with sport teams, school supplies and cleaning supplies. Our Varsity Girls Soccer team brought things to the Schoharie soccer team to help them out with things they lost in the flood. Our Varsity Volleyball team gave the Schoharie Volleyball team money to help with anything they lost. “Students and teachers brought in lots, teachers from Galway brought money for teachers in Schoharie” Mr. Brooks told me. “Galway has been very good, there’s been a positive feeling”.
