“Bodies” in NYC

Bodies+in+NYC

By: Samantha Sherman

I usually really hate going to NYC, but for this trip I was actually really excited. When we got down to the city on the bus I realized that all of the fundraising and amount of money that I did have to pay was definitely worth it. The sun and the heat were wonderful when we stepped off the bus and I was ready for the museum.

When we got down there we had about an hour and a half, so we walked around the seaport. After walking around, we walked across the street “Bodies…The Exhibition.” When we walked in the building we could feel the temperature change and get warmer. We placed our belongings in bins to retrieve them at the end of the tour.

Walking through the museum, I was very amazed about how the bodies were right there in front of us. It was almost like standing by a mannequin, but it was a real human. There wasn’t glass or a rope between you and this actual human body. You weren’t supposed to touch them, but you could have held their hand. (That’s how close you could get to them.)

I was amazed by some of the facts I learned there. Babies and infants have more bones then an adult. Your biggest muscle is your gluteus maximus! The brain weighs about 3 pounds. The valves in your veins keep your blood from flowing backward. A pack of cigarettes takes 3 hours and 40 minutes off your life. Your heart is the same size as your fist. When you take your pulse, you are feeling your artery. There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the adult human body. The tongue is made up of 16 muscles.

After we got out of the museum we had some more time to walk around the seaport. It was cool around the seaport. It was cool and I brought a few t-shirts. Our bus ride both ways was amazing! We had a great bus (practically new) and a good driver. We had a stop on the way up and down. The whole trip was very educational and very relaxing. If we could have school like that I would be a lot more into it. I want to look into massage therapy as a side career and seeing the bodies could help me with that career. (By the way I got to hold a real heart, brain, and more!)

It was amazing and worth all of the fundraising and work!
