Since we are coming near to the end of a rainy April, everyone is hopeful that the month of May will start looking up and we will start entering some spring and even summer like weather. However the question is what will May hold? Well, everyone knows the famous saying “April showers bring May flowers” so be hopeful that our May will be filled with beautiful blooms that will brighten up upstate New York. Another good question is what flowers should we be expecting and what are the most popular for our area?
According to an article and advertisement written by a local company by the name “Frank Gallo Florist,” daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and the cherry blossom tree are all very popular flowers and plants for this area. They all begin to bloom in spring as the snow begins to melt away and the sun begins to shine much brighter. Out of these flowers listed here, the most popular appears to be the daffodil. Daffodils are the perfect flower for spring because they are grown to represent new beginnings and their beautiful colors bring hope and joy to people during this beautiful time of year. The tulip is the next most popular and this flower comes in many colors and shades but the most popular are yellow, orange, pink, and white. Tulips happen to be one of my favorite flowers and I usually see them appear in mid-May and when they do you cannot take your eye off of them. The hyacinth flower is used more in elegant occasions such as spring weddings as it has a very potent florescent smell and can be fit into any wanted floral arrangement. Furthermore, cherry blossoms are known to bloom this time of year as well. A cherry blossom tree is one of the most beautiful and eye-catching trees there are. Unfortunately they only bloom for a very short time in the spring, but they are associated with renewal and new beginnings. These are just a few flowers that are popular for this area so let’s see what else we should be expecting to bloom.
Since we do live in an area with a lot of woodland we can still count on flowers to brighten that up. One common flower grown in woodlands is the trillium along with beautiful small yellow flowers known as buttercups. We will also see wild geraniums sometimes blooming in the woods and even wild raspberries and blackberries. While wild raspberries and blackberries are fruits when they first bloom around late April or early May, they grow a very beautiful white flower that really brightens up woodlands.
Now, there are very few flowers that absolutely thrive during the rainy month of April, but once we get into May an entire new world of color is opened up to us. Common flowers like roses, lilacs, lilies, peonies, Lily of the Valley and other various flowers bloom and cultivate some native spices here in Upstate New York.
So while the month of April brought some darkness, rain, and somewhat gloomy weather, we are almost to May. Entering May means there will be no time until you look into your yards and gardens or even just as you drive down the road and see beautiful blooming flowers that will immediately bring a smile to your face, because the saying is true, April showers do bring May flowers.
