GALWAY–Our little school of Galway is the home to many different traditions. Some are common ones, such as Spirit Week or the Memorial Day Parade. Others, not so common like the Push Cart Fair or the hallway decorations during the holidays. In our search for which Galway traditions the faculty and students like best, one tradition strongly stood out: PROM.
Prom is the one time of the year that most every teenage girl loves and most every teenage boy dreads. The Friday of Prom is one of the most exciting days of the year. With the half day of school, everyone seems to get pumped up for the big event of the evening. In the short few hours between getting out of the school and Gawking Hour, the ladies have to cram to get everything done like hair, make-up, nails, and getting dressed. Meanwhile, their dates shower…maybe.
However, nothing looks more amazing than seeing the ladies in their dresses and the gentlemen in their tuxes arriving in their limos, tractors, and trucks at Gawking Hour. With a name like “Gawking Hour,” you’d expect people walking around with their mouths hanging open – and that’s exactly right! Everyone seems to clean up so amazingly. The gentlemen look handsome and ladies so absolutely drop dead gorgeous, it makes your jaw drop.
With everybody wanting to take their pictures on the front lawn, all of the couples feel like they’re walking on the red carpet – and they are! They are the stars of the night! Everybody in the town comes out to catch a glimpse of these small town celebrities.
We asked some people what they had to say about Prom:
Ashley Kowalzyk:
“I think prom has always been a community event because even though most of us weren’t old enough to go, I always remembered looking at the beautiful dresses and the funny arrivals people made at Gawking Hour. I couldn’t wait until it was my turn, and now it’s finally here.”
Hannah Goldstein:
“I like Gawking Hour and Prom because the whole community gets together. Everyone’s family shows up. I’ve been to Prom the past two years and it’s always fun to show off what you’re wearing to the community.”
Michelle Gribben:
“Prom is my favorite. Obviously. It’s so much fun. We all get together and have a good time no matter who our friends are. Gawking Hour is the best because you can take pictures with everyone – it’s dedicated to pictures. I don’t know what Prom would be like without it. Having a half day lets you get ready without having any stress.”
Alexis Hidalgo:
“Prom is my favorite! It’s fun! I like to dance! Get jiggy with it! You can look pretty! Everyone looks nice! I like to pull up in a fly car! That’s the best feeling!”
Ben Manna:
“Having Prom on a Friday is a tradition I wouldn’t want to change. I love having Gawking Hour on the front lawn.”
