Worcester weighs in on the prequel debate

Worcester weighs in on the prequel debate

I assume everyone who clicked on this post knows what Star Wars is so I’m not going to take the time to explain it. However, what you may not know is that I was attacked for stating my opinion of the prequels while discussing Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm.

I was actually kind of surprised with the response but I will defend my position. Let’s start with the problems the Prequel trilogy as a whole have.

First, the characters. I think this is a good place to start. These prequels have the most boring, unintelligent, and poorly- acted characters I’ve ever seen. Lets go through them shall we.

1. Anakin Skywalker- Played by Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen. This might actually be the most poorly-acted character in the trilogy which is unfortuante because he’s the main character. First of all, the movies treat him as some sort of Space savior. When in the original trilogy did they ever hint that he was Space Jesus? Never. And they probably take the Christlike qualities further than anything else. I mean let’s start with the fact that the movie says that he was conceived of the Force. I kid you not, this is stated. Seriously. The we find out he built C-3PO (Remember that it’ll be important later) and a podracer. So he likes to build things. Like a carpenter. So then we find out there are prophecies saying he will destroy all evil. What? Why are they treating him with so much importance? Seriously, I think Obi-Wan would’ve told Luke that his father was DESTINED to destroy evil and didn’t. That’s not something you don’t talk about. So then we get to the acting. Now I know what you’re saying. You’re saying “He’s just a kid it’s not his fault he can’t act.” Well first, if The Sixth Sense taught us anything it’s that kids can act. It’s also Lucas’ fault for writing the character as a kid in the first one. Yeah the originals mentioned an age-limit for Jedi training, but it’s never given so it could be any age up to Luke’s age. Now let’s get to the romance with Padme in the next two. He acts like a total creeper. It doesn’t help that his dialogue is garbage. And speaking of the romance let’s move on to the leading lady of the trilogy.

2. Padme Amidala- Played by Natalie Portman. So we have this 14 year old girl that Lucas wants to marry Anakin. Ok so we have to find a way to get her in the adventure. How about we make her the Queen of the planet of these people that the Jedi are helping? But then lucas realizes he doesn’t want Anakin marrying a queen. So he makes her an elected queen. Now though elected monarchs do exist in some parts of the world, I doubt anyone would elect a 14 year old girl. Then, we have this thing where she has a body-double take her place sometimes. And I guess this makes her need to talk like Ferris Bueller’s Teacher. Except it’s not funny and in fact they digitally altered her voice to make it less noticeable that there were two people playing the queen. Seriously if you don’t believe me compare the trailer and film; they are different. Then there’s the romance with Anakin that I’ll get to when I talk about Episode 2.

3. Obi-Wan Kenobi- Played by Ewan McGregor. Actually my only problem with this character is that we never see a significant connection with Anakin. All we see them do is exchange one friendly comment in the beginning of both 2 and 3 and then bicker and fight for the rest of the movie.

4. Qui-Gonn Jinn- Played by Liam Neeson. Why does this character exist? The originals told us that Obi-Wan was trained by Yoda. Episode 2 tries to rectify that by showing that all Jedi are trained by Yoda as children. That’s really dumb. Qui-Gonn might actually be the worst Jedi ever. All the other Jedi sense danger in Anakin but he can’t. He also makes stupid decisions like 1. Split up when going down to a planet. 2. Following a giant rabbit underwater. 3.Using the Force to cheat on a legitimate bet. I’ll get to more of his flaws when I talk about the first prequel.

5. Jar Jar Binks- voiced by Ahmed Best. This character is so annoying. He’s the character that’s there for all the children to laugh at.  After all, a movie with more politics than a presidential debate is totally for children. The Cgi for him isn’t even that impressive.

6. Yoda- Voiced by Frank Oz. Yeah this trilogy managed to screw up Yoda. Subsequently screwing up the Force. Let me explain. In Episode 5 Luke is told to meet this great Jedi Master. He travels to a swamp to find this person and find this creature that is childish and silly. But then we find out he’s Yoda and that was a patience test. It really hammers in the point that the Jedi are more about the Force than the lightsaber. But in Episode 2 they have him fight Count Dooku. That defeats the purpose of the “size matters not” thing because Yoda’s constantly having to compensate for his size. I just don’t get how Lucas doesn’t understand that.

7. Count Dooku- Played by Christopher Lee. All I will say is this. It’s the second movie of a trilogy and the main villain is a man who betrayed his order of people with supernatural powers. The audience doesn’t meet him until after he’s turned evil. He dies in the beginning of the third. Know here’s a question. Is the character played by Christopher Lee Count Dooku or Saruman?

Now that that’s over we can get to the next problem with the trilogy as a whole . The special effects. Everything is blue screen or green screen. Every shot seems to have some sort of a special effect in it. And they’re all created on a computer. The original trilogy had such great puppets it makes you wonder how they did it. But with the originals you know. Its CGI. Plain and simple.

Soon I shall be back with a review of the Phantom Menace.
