A song by song review of the new release

A song by song review of the new release

Album name: Midsummer Station

Release date: August 21st

Track 1-“Dreams and Disasters”

This song is very upbeat; it’s your average pop song.  Many teenage girl will fall in love with its unoriginal club beat and catchy chorus.  Very repetitive.

Track 2-“Shooting Star”

This song’s intro is reminiscent of Owl City’s song “Fireflies,” then goes to a clapping club beat.  The concept of the song is basically the same as “Firework” by Katy Perry with different wording.  Not making anyone a fan today.

Track 3-“Gold”

This song sounds familiar but I can’t put my finger on it.  But, I definitely can hear the auto-tune which certainly isn’t helping it.

Track 4-“Dementia”

This song is actually enjoyable with a nice narrative/story to go along with it.  There’s no irritating club beat and it seems pretty original  It’s more rock than pop but still fits the Owl City sound.

Track 5-“I’m Coming After You”

This song contains another irritating club beat; it seems much of the album was written for dancing.  The singer’s voice reminds me of the lead singer of Fun.  The song name and lyrics seem threating, coming after you.

Track 6-“Spread of Love”

The intro on this song is pretty predictable.  As you get more into the song, it seems as though an attempt was made to incorporate dub-step.  Not a good idea.  Another predictable song.

Track 7-“Good Time”

The synthesizer doesn’t belong.  Not in a song like this anyways.    The only really good part of the song is Carly Rae Jepsen; her verse is smooth.  Her vocals only may have made the synthesizer tolerable.

Track 8-“Embers”

Another song that sounds like something I’ve heard before.  I almost predicted the entire chorus.  This song is the same as “Shooting Star” just a little toned down.  Not in good way.

Track 9-“Silhouette”

The piano was a nice touch.  This song was more down to earth with a meaningful chorus and lyrics.  It is the best song on the album, wished all the songs were like this.  His voice is soft and the subtlety in the song works.

Track 10-“Metropolis”

They should’ve closed with “Silhouette”.  The beginning was perfect.  I thought it was going to top the previous song but

Track 11-“Take it all away”

The intro of the song contained a lot of dissonance; the sounds didn’t mix together.  The drums on the song are too heavy for his singing voice.  It sounds like he is being crushed by the drums.  I don’t even have to listen to the rest of this song to realize it’s going to be repetitive like the rest.
