Album Review: Lace Up

Album Review: Lace Up

By Nathan Hammond

1) “Save Me” (Feat. Avenged Sevenfold)-  I enjoyed the build up to the vocals, very mellow, until the guitars come in, then it becomes… inspiring. MGK goes deep in this song. His voice and the guitars work very well, and I enjoyed how he gave a shout out to his team. The transition from his vocals to the chorus were a little rocky, and the screaming doesn’t seem to totally fit, but overall it was a great intro to the album, a good hook to keep you listening.

2) “What I Do” (Feat. Bun B and Dub-O)- Interesting instrument choice for the beginning. Not bad, just interesting. Having MGK sing (with ‘enhanced’ vocals obviously)) was a nice touch, but when Bun B comes into the song, you forget that its MGK’s album for a second, as he owns this song. Probably wasn’t a good choice for MGK to feature Bun B on his first album, but I’m not complaining. Nice chorus, something some teenagers could chant in their room for a while. MGK’s verse is good, but it definitely could’ve been better, seemed a little weak.

3) “Wild Boy” (Feat. Waka Flocka Flame)- Even early in the album you can tell it’s very feature heavy, which is okay if you’re the right person. When this song starts though, you wouldn’t worry about that. You’d probably be jumping up and down from the energy from the song. The chorus is extremely catchy, and when you hear Waka scream Brick Squad, you know it’s about to get crazy. While Waka’s lyrics are really meaningless, the energy in his voice makes up for everything. MGK closes up the song with a short verse. It’s definitely a club song.

4) “Lace Up” (Feat. Lil Jon)- When you hear Lil Jon in the beginning of the song, you know this could be a hit. Lil Jon and MGK bring an energy to this song that is absolutely amazing. When you hear Lil Jon on the chorus, you just want to bounce. MGK’s 2nd verse almost puts his 1st to shame. But, when Lil Jon starts rapping, you just want to hang from the ceiling, and have a big party. His voice makes the verse really stand out. A very good song, very well put together.

5) “Stereo” (Feat. Alex Fitts)- This song is very clever.  It’s about a girl who always uses her stereo and brings it everywhere. As she gets older, she forgets about it, and her little sisters falls in love with it. The clever part of this song is at first you may not realize that he’s pretending to be a stereo, you may think he’s just be a sneaky boyfriend. Very nice instrumentals and a nice smooth flow over a good drum beat.

6) “All We Have” (Feat. Anna Yvette)- Anna is a very talented singer and was a good choice for this style of song. The emotion of this song is real and very raw. This is the kind of song that got MGK his fan base. This song tells the story of the things that have gone wrong in his life.  That may sounds preachy and over done, but this song is very original. It is one of my favorites on this album.

7) “See My Tears”- This is the first song on the album without a feature. Well, it doesn’t give credit to the singer chanting rain in the background. Another deep song with real emotion. It talks about the hardships of living in Cleveland and trying to make it in the rap game. The chorus touches my heart; it’s one of those choruses that will be a quote for years.

8) “D3mons” (Feat. DMX)- A creepy song overall. The beginning has an eerie feeling to it, and DMX’s growl doesn’t help. MGK’s gasp helps add to the creepiness. The first verse is about the pain of trying to quit doing drugs and the struggles. When DMX comes in, he murders his verse. Truthfully, his verse isn’t really about the subject matter, but his voice makes it work. The chorus is completed with his growls in it. DMX’s second verse goes better with this song than the first, but both seem to be equal. The last verse was put together very well with the ad libs between lines. Good song for Halloween!

9) “Edge of Destruction”(Feat. Tech N9ne and Twista)- When I heard that Tech, Twist, and MGK were on a song together, I assumed it was going to be the fastest thing I had heard in the longest time. It was nothing close to what I expected. It was a heartfelt song that was kind of a “look at me now” song, which has an amazing flow, and has Twista and Tech both singing! (You don’t hear that everyday). Twista definitely fed off of Tech’s verse, flow wise. Then MGK comes in, and it sounds nothing like the other two flow wise. He shows that he owns this song, that this is for his album, and not their project.

10) “Runnin” (Feat. Planet IV)-  The interlude at the beginning from MGK was very inspirational. It seems that in the beginning that he sped through his verse a little faster than he should’ve, but it wasn’t too off. The chorus fits well and the second interlude was even more inspirational than the first. One of the best songs on the album, about how even if you’re tired, you can keep going. You can always keep going, but you shouldn’t run away.

11) “Invincible” (Feat. Ester Dean)- Having a mellow beginning was a good choice for this song. The drums on this song were very strong, but in a good way. But the thing that stands out most in this song is the beginning of the second versewhen the page rips. That whole verse is absolutely amazing. No way it could’ve been done better.

12) “On My Way”-  This song in itself shows a softer MGK, a more humble side that remembers where he came from and who was there from the beginning. He knows that he’s doing better than most in the rap game, and he recognizes it without bragging. The interlude in the middle of the song shows that even though he’s  had a rough life, he’s had some good times with his best friends. His second verse is very metaphorical with all the movie references and is deep.  This has to be the best song on the album.

13) “End of The Road” (Feat. Blackbear)- This song is a fan favorite, since MGK made the instrumental himself, and basically did everything for this song by himself. Another song that reflects on how better off he is now than he was before he started to blow up. Very well put together and a good choice for the chorus. A very calm song, could be someone’s song with their husband or wife.

14) “Half Naked and Almost Famous”-  A fun song about being so close to having your name known everywhere, but still being able to enjoy life without people always bothering you. It shows that MGK does have fun with life, and that he loves what he does. The sample of the Naked and Famous was a nice touch

15) “La La La” (The Floating Song)-  A very bubbly song, it seems that the last few songs are more fun than anything, which is good. Not every song should be deeper than anything. I like the skit in the song about ordering a lot of food and not having any money at the end

16) “Hold On” [Shut Up] (Feat. Young Jeezy)- This song seems to be Wild Boy part two, with a more sophisticated feature. MGK kills his verse, and his chorus rings true. He’s saying if you didn’t support him when he was starving and you want something now, he doesn’t want anything to do with you. Jeezy kills his feature with a nice flow and good lyrics. Oh, and his voice makes everything better.

17) “Warning Shot” (Feat. Cassie)-  A nice ending to the album, a fast paced song that MGK fans enjoy. Cassie does a good job with the chorus, and the instrumentals are great. The thing that makes this song is definitely the rapid fire flow that he manages to pull off with complex rhyming. The drums were also a nice touch.
