A parade to remember

A small-town tradition

For many Americans, Memorial Day weekend is a great chance to relax and take a break from work and school to honor those who have died serving our country. Some have barbecues and parties. Others have memorial services. But on Monday, May 26, residents of Galway and other surrounding towns all came together to celebrate Memorial Day with a parade.

There was a lot of excitement before the parade even began. In the park in the center of town, there were food stands and vendors of all kinds set up and ready for the exciting day ahead. People were lining the street in suspense. They could hear the firetrucks testing their sirens and could see the policemen in the front of the line awaiting the signal. And finally, the parade began.

Many different organizations and groups participated in the march. The Galway Volunteer Fire department, along with the Harmony Corners and Charlton departments  drove down the street in their trucks, throwing candy to ecstatic children. The Galway High School marching band, led by Britt Keller carrying the American flag also marched. There were also many Galway students that marched with the volunteer fire department, Leo’s Club, the Galway Public Library, and several different animal rescue groups. There were even several Galway High graduates walking around their hometown!

As an American, I was very happy to see that, even in a little town like Galway, so many people could come together to celebrate Memorial Day and have fun at a parade. Overall it was a fun day and it was nice to see so many smiling faces. From Galway and all around the area. What’s important is that we took the time to remember our troops and all that they have done and are still doing for our country.
