Galway students competed at the 11th annual SUNY Cobleskill High School Agriculture Day on September 30th.
Ag High School Day gives students an opportunity to tour SUNY Cobleskill and  see various opportunities for careers in Agriculture & Natural Resources. Various demonstrations were going on throughout the day across the campus. Some students tried their hand at fly fishing, while others were able to drive the latest in precision agriculture equipment including GPS navigated tractors. SUNY’s Woodsmen Team was teaching students how to climb trees like an arborist and the various Livestock and Canine Clubs were giving demonstrations in Animal Science.
Students were able to participate in mock Career Development Events, contests designed to test their skills in various aspects of agriculture and natural resources – everything from communications to welding. An informational video about CDE contests can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8nXD21AdRg .
Students from Galway competed against 33 other districts from across the state at the HS Ag Days. Justin Matthews earned 7th place in the Tractor Driving 2-Wheel Trailer Contest (see photo), Collin Wieland tied for 7th place in the Forestry Measurement Contest and Lucas Costanzo placed 4th in the Dozer Operation Contest.
Once an FFA Chapter is chartered for Galway, FFA members will have the opportunity to participate in CDE’s at local, state and national levels.
