Local “Haunted” Places to See This Halloween

‘Tis the season to be spooked and what better way than visiting local “haunted” locations.  I have scoured the Internet looking for local locations that may be of interest to the extreme thrill seeker.  I came up with a list of 8 locations.

***Please Note*** I am not actually recommending anyone go and visit these locations at times in which it would be considered illegal.  Some locations even stepping foot on the property would be illegal.

It should also be noted that this article in no way expresses my viewpoints towards the paranormal, everything is purely speculative and can be left to your imagination.

Saratoga County Homestead Sanitarium – Providence, New York1

The Saratoga County Homestead Sanitarium opened in 1914 and treated patients for tuberculosis until 1960. Many people claim to have been inside and have witnessed some sort of paranormal activity. If searched online its considered one of

the most haunted places around here. In 2006, a movie called, “The Expedition” was released. A film documentary of five Canadian filmmakers who sent forth one Halloween night in 2004, to explore the Saratoga Homestead. In the morning, only four come out of the building, and to this day, the missing film member has never been seen.

If it were allowed, I would say that this would be a great place to check out this Halloween, however the building is not in great shape and if caught any trespassers would be arrested .

Green Hill Cemetery – Amsterdam, New York2

There is countless ghost stories told by the people who have visited this cemetery

most famous one being “the lady in white” story. The story goes that the spirit of Susan Thomas haunts the cemetery and is claimed to be seen wandering around late at night down the road and through the cemetery calling out and searching for her husband’s grave. I have visited the cemetery during the day and its pretty creepy, so I think Halloween night would be a great night to visit this place. There are visiting hours so if you go after 9, it is considered trespassing.

Vale Cemetery – Schenectady, New York

3

The largest cemetery in Schenectady which opened in 1857 is supposedly extremely haunted. Although highly unlikely, witnesses say that the statues “cry out at night and bleed from their eyes”. Also shadowy figures have been seen along with strange lights. Singing has also been heard coming from the old church house on the property. From the stories I’ve read on this, I wouldn’t recommend visiting this place, but if you’re looking for a thrill and you do go, good luck! There are visiting hours so if you go after them, it is considered trespassing.

Community Reformed Church of Colonie – Albany, New York

No pictures found.

The Community Reformed Church of Colonie is supposedly haunted. There are stories of visitors seeing shadowy figures and the sounds of children playing can be heard late at night. Although the information I got on this place isn’t much, going into a haunted church late at night could be fun but highly likely that you would get into trouble.

Crandall House – Ballston Spa, New York

No pictures found

In 1887 Mr. Crandall shot his wife’s mother and step-sister to death and then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide in the house. After his death the neighbors would still see him walking around the property at night and sitting in the den of the house.

There is also a story that a neighbor got his car stuck in the snow outside the Crandall house and Sylvester himself came and helped pull the man out of the snow, but those are only stories. The address to the house is 1332 W High Street so you can drive by it this Halloween.

Most Holy Trinity Church – Brooklyn, New York

6

Although it is not really local, this church is one of the most haunted places in New York. It was built on what was once a cemetery and also seven former pastors are buried in the cellar of the building. People have died unexpectedly in various places throughout the church and people who visit here claim that they have heard foot steps and the sound of someone walking up and down the stairs when no one else was there.

New Amsterdam Theater – New York City

7

In 1920 actress Olive Thomas accidentally overdosed on her husband’s pills and died in a Paris hotel room. People claim her ghost roams in the New Amsterdam Theater in New York where she used to spend most of her time on stage.  They say her ghost wanders the halls carrying a blue pill bottle and she usually only appears for men and although she doesn’t talk people say she “flirts” with them. This is another distant location, but one in which the public visits everyday.

Frear Park – Troy, New York

8

Local legend say that there is a “ghost beast” that resides in the park.

It has been said that the ghost attacks cars and shakes them as if a human was sitting on the trunk. People also claim that there has been claw marks left behind on their vehicle. I am not to sure how true this is but it seems like a pretty cool place to check out.  It is a public park, but visiting after dawn can result in a trespassing charge.
